Bamboo - how to keep it from spreading outdoors?

We would like to try some ornamental bamboo in the yard, but have heard that it is invasive, Is there any proven way to contain a bamboo grove to a small ( 4' by 12' ) area without having to cut it down periodically? The place we want to plant it is next to a ditch with a small running stream in it. Any help appreciated! Thanks!
